ACA Neo. Geo: Blazing Star for Switch Reviews. Blazing Star is a solid side- scrolling shooter. The backgrounds are great.

The music is engaging. It's a really polished game. But, it's too familiar to be memorable. If you've played any games in the Gradius series, you've pretty much played Blazing Star. While it is very good, for what it is, it doesn't really add anything new to the genre. In fact the power- up system in Blazing Star is inferior to other games that came before it. Boy had a better system. And, 9 years before BS was released, Xenon 2 had a phenomenal power up system. The presentation is really good. The game has a very quick and colorful arcade feel. But, it's a bit over the top. The sound can be kind of annoying.

When you pick up a bonus, a female Japanese voice exclaims "Bonus!". When you pick up a power- up, the same voice says "Power Up!". The problem is: there are hundreds of bonuses per level. Sometimes, the bonuses are so frequent they overlap. Bonu- Bon- B- Bonus!" she says, if you fly through four of them. It gets really annoying, after a while. I have the same criticism of Puyo Puyo Tetris.

I don't want to hear the same audio sample repeated fifty times in three minutes. This is a fairly minor gripe, but - nonetheless - it detracts from my ability to enjoy the game. Watch Daylight Online Metacritic.

While I do enjoy playing Blazing Star, to some extent, I'd rather be playing a better shooter. It's not a bad shooter, but it's not brilliant.

And, there are so many more deserving games to port to the Switch IMO. Something that amused me about Blazing Star: there are some bad Japanese- English translations. When the game ends, for example, it says "ENTRY YOUR NAME" And, during gameplay, the words "HEY: AN EVENT ITEM COMES" and "GET IT MORE!" appear on the screen. Having said that: I'd prefer it if the same words didn't appear on the screen repeatedly.

The novelty factor wears thin pretty quickly.
